I overheard a conversation between a health visitor and a social worker this morning. The Social Worker was saying that a child JUST had a speech problem and the health Visitor was describing a behaviour issue. They seemed to think that these were two separate, completely in-related issues but the more they talked the more, I thought it sounded obvious that the two were related! They both agreed that the parent’s demands on the child were unrealistically high.
I had to admit that I’d been listening and we discussed the relationship between language/ communication issues and behaviour, and parenting and behaviour and communication development. They were genuinely interested but their knowledge base was so patchy, it was worrying.
It made me realise that we need to be targeting social workers and health visitors for the Elklan training. I have invited both the next Working with under 5s in June. So, if you don’t already add Local Support Teams to your marketing for courses, let’s start now.
