I overheard a conversation between a health visitor and a social worker this morning. The Social Worker was saying that a child JUST had a speech problem and the health Visitor was describing a behaviour issue. They seemed to think that these were two separate, completely in-related issues but the more they talked the more, I thought it sounded obvious that the two were related! They both agreed that the parent’s demands on the child were unrealistically high. ..

As an Elklan Tutor, I was discussing what the Elklan training could do for one particular school today. I know the Head Teacher by reputation and understood that whatever I said, he would need to be able to read it for himself. The ASLTIP conference in March really embraced new technology in several ways but one which grabbed our attention was the lighting talks section. These were 10 presentations of 5 minutes which sounds easy BUT these had to be 25 slides, each with 15 seconds which moved forwards independently. We thought it might be a good place to talk about the Communication Friendly Schools Project. ..

We have been talking about the the many benefits of Elklan training for TAs but even I was pleasantly surprised this week: I run Smart Talkers pre-school communication groups, some of which are for a universal audience and some which are targeted for referred children with definite needs. They are commissioned by the Sure Start Children’s Centres and we work closely with the mainstream services such as social workers, health visitors, NHS SaLTs, Local support teams etc. ..

We mentioned a few weeks ago a scheme called the National Scholarship Fund where Teachers and special educational needs (SEN) support staff are be able to bid for funds from the scheme worth up to £2 million to deepen their subject knowledge and develop their skills. In previous years funding has been secured for Elklan training. There is a very short window of opportunity for this so please pass this link to anyone you think will be interested or eligible:
