'The best resource I've seen in ages!': Early Language Builders

Wednesday, February 13, 2013

I've just finished my first intensive 'Speech and language support for under 5s' which worked really well. The feedback was extremely positive about all aspects of the course but one positive was mentioned  on most of the forms: Early Language Builders, the book which accompanies the course.

This invaluable and practical book provides detailed advice and activities to promote the speaking and listening skills of all children aged between 2 and 6 years. It has been widely used across thousands of settings and enables professionals and parents to understand the communication difficulties children experience. It gives relevant advice and is full of lots of ideas to support children with a wide range of speech and language difficulties

Amongst the topics covered are:

  • Developing play for language
  • Encouraging appropriate adult-child interaction
  • The development of attention levels
  • Helping children develop their understanding of language and verbal reasoning
  • Developing social skills through play
  • Helping pre-school children with autistic spectrum disorder
  • Helping children develop phonological awareness
  • Helping children with unclear speech

'It's brilliant, just what I've been looking for.'

'I wished I'd seen it before.'

'I showed the rest of the staff and they want to read it.'

'It's full of great information ideas and practical ideas.'

'It pulls together what we're learning and makes me want to know even more.'

Priced at just £22.00, it's available from the website click here

How to write a blog post: tips to get started

Wednesday, January 16, 2013

A blog is one of the best ways to advertise any business in 2013. To be seen as an expert in your field (but with a human touch) is what marketing and PR professionals are telling us all we need to do. I have been blogging for a while now but it’s still more daunting to add to someone else’s blog. I think this is one reason why British people in general don’t like to do guest blog posts. There is also the fact that people who work with children are not good at blowing their own trumpet! ..

The Communication Trust has, this week, published its evaluation of 2011’s Hello campaign, the national year of communication, revealing a major boost in public awareness of the importance of speech, language and communication. The organisation also launched its new five-year strategy which focuses on empowering the children’s workforce to achieve two major goals: to ensure  all children are supported in developing good speech, language and communication skills and that those  who struggle are identified early and supported to communicate to the best of their ability.

More than the obvious benefits of Elklan!

Wednesday, December 05, 2012

I met with a speech and language therapy student last night who I hadn't seen for a while. She is a second year student who has just completed a placement with a schools-based team. She had visited many schools with two different therapists and was discussing how one of the schools had stood head and shoulders above the others. It had as many children with problems, as many pupils overall, the staff were of a similar range of ages and experience but the overall impression was that the school were superior in dealing with children with speech, language and communication difficulties. ..
