Information for Managers of SaLT services: Why commission training?

The RCSLT position paper, 'Supporting children with speech, language and communication needs within integrated children's services' M Gascoigne, 2006,is widely accepted by the Department of Health and the Department of Education as the optimal way of delivering services to children with speech, language and communication need (SLCN). The report states that the training of others, including parents, should be viewed as a central activity for SaLTs. The Bercow review of services for children and young people and the subsequent Government action plan 'Better communication' also states that training of others is fundamental to the SaLT role.

Every SaLT service needs to be commissioned to meet the needs of a wide range of children; in some instances the best way to work with a child is to train those who are supporting them.

Elklan has a wide range of courses all of which are externally quality assured and accredited by an OfQual regulated national Awarding Organisation. Commissioned SaLT services can deliver all or some Elklan courses to parents, carers and the wider workforce.

Elklan courses have been proved to deliver improved outcomes for children, ensure more effective use of SaLT time, ensure more appropriate referrals to SaLT, produce practitioners who can support all children with SLCN in their setting, and education and health services which give a consistent and effective message.
